How does an ATM cassette work?

    1. Cash Loading

    • ATM cassettes are filled with banknotes through a secure loading process. Bank employees or authorized personnel access the ATM's cash - loading compartment. The cassette is removed from the ATM (or, in some cases, accessed without complete removal) and opened in a secure area.
    • The banknotes are neatly stacked and inserted into the cassette. The cassette is designed to hold the notes in an organized manner to facilitate dispensing. For example, the notes are usually placed in a way that allows them to be fed out one by one through a dispensing mechanism. The cassette has guides and partitions to keep the notes in place.

    2. Connection to the ATM System

    • Once the cassette is inserted back into the ATM, it is electronically connected to the ATM's internal control system. The system recognizes the cassette and starts to monitor its status, including the number and denomination of the banknotes it contains.
    • The connection is usually through a set of electrical contacts or a data interface. This allows the ATM's central processing unit to communicate with the cassette's internal sensors and mechanisms. For example, the system can query the cassette to find out the remaining cash balance.

    3. Cash - Dispensing Process

    • When a customer requests a cash withdrawal through the ATM's user interface (touch - screen or keypad), the ATM's software calculates the number of banknotes needed to fulfill the request.
    • The software then sends a signal to the cassette's dispensing mechanism. The dispensing mechanism is usually a combination of motors, rollers, and belts. The motors start to rotate, which in turn moves the rollers and belts. These components work together to pick up a single banknote from the stack and move it towards the output slot of the ATM.
    • As the banknote moves through the cassette's dispensing path, sensors are used to ensure that only one note is dispensed at a time. These sensors can detect the thickness and presence of the banknote. For example, if two notes are stuck together and try to pass through the sensor, the ATM's system will detect the abnormal thickness and trigger an error - handling mechanism, such as aborting the transaction and returning the notes to the cassette.

    4. Monitoring and Security

    • The ATM cassette is constantly monitored during its operation. Sensors in and around the cassette track the cash level. As banknotes are dispensed, the system updates the count of remaining notes in the cassette.
    • In case of any security threats, such as an attempt to break into the cassette or an unauthorized removal of the cassette from the ATM, security sensors are triggered. These sensors can send an alarm signal to the bank's security monitoring center. Some ATMs also have features like locking mechanisms that prevent the cassette from being removed without proper authorization or during a transaction in progress.
